Many churches carry forward staff structures that were designed for a very different season of ministry. Consider this familiar story: a once-thriving congregation of 2,000, known for its strong global mission and robust programming. Over time, the community changes. Membership declines. Today, the church gathers 200 people—faithful, committed, but living in a very different context. And yet, the staffing model remains the same. There is still a senior pastor and head of staff, a global missions pastor, a youth pastor, and a children’s pastor. But there are few children, fewer youth, and little active global mission. Meanwhile, the neighborhood surrounding the church is facing urgent challenges—food insecurity, poverty, and violence—and no staff role is aligned with that reality. This is not a failure of faith. It’s a question of alignment. For vitality to return, the church must realign its people and resources with its present calling. Staff modeling helps congregations step back and ask: • What is God calling us to in this season and this community? • How are our current staff roles aligned—or misaligned—with that call? • Where are we investing energy that no longer bears fruit? • What new opportunities are we being invited into? Through a thoughtful, collaborative process, staff modeling reimagines how leadership, gifts, and resources can be aligned with the church’s current mission—so that energy is focused where it matters most. The goal is not simply to restructure, but to position the church for renewed purpose, relevance, and impact in the community it now serves. This consultation is best for heads of staff, governing body representatives, and representatives of personnel and hiring entities.
